Meet Anastasia: Merchandiser, Vintage Curator, and 90s Minimalist

1) Tell us more about who you are and what you do!
My name is Anastasia, and I live in San Francisco where I moved 10 years ago from Minsk, Belarus. I work in merchandising for Banana Republic: on a daily basis I make a lot of decisions, big & small, that shape the assortment of sweaters for the brand. Outside of work, I live an active life: running, yoga, hiking, reading, and dancing late into the night are the things that bring me the most joy!

2) What do you enjoy about working in the fashion industry and what do you find challenging?
I loooove working with product, and seeing it come to life from ideation to a physical thing. Finessing big and small details & obsessing over making right decisions - color, fabric, silhouette, fit, styling - is something I really think I am good at & what brings me a lot of joy to do. Working in fashion also means I get to watch runway shows as part of research - for someone like me who as a teenager spent days scrolling through fashion blogposts it feels like my favorite way to relax, and it's so inspiring! However, the pace of the fashion industry is noticeably fast and it can be easy to get decision-making fatigue or feel burnt out. Fashion is a lot of hard work and very little glamour - the rumors are true (don't worry though, there are definitely glamorous moments like riding the elevator with Zac Posen or scoring a designer find at a sample sale for $5).

3) You also have a vintage shop! Tell us more about it, and what do you look for when curating your shop?
Yes, I do! 22vntglry is this concept I came up with a couple years ago & I am still working on bringing the full vision to life one day. In addition to being a vintage resale platform, I want it to be a physical space that would exhibit art & photography, sell vintage, and offer a place for creatives & community to come together during whether to work & collaborate during the day, or dance & hang at nighttime. When it comes to curating the pieces for resale, I mainly rely on my  personal taste & keep the actual social trends in mind. I usually look for pieces that are unique, that seem to have some history behind them or the ones that are trending & covetable yet timeless.

4) Any tips for balancing your full time job and side hustle?
The most helpful advice is probably to be ok with not being able to do it all. I wish I spent more time going to antique & thrift stores to find more pieces for my shop, or that I could work on creating content more consistently, but the reality is I let myself rest when I feel like I need it. An exhausted mind & body creativity's worst enemy. Sometimes taking a step back is exactly what's needed for a new creative boost! That being said, I believe it's also about believing in your vision & taking small steps forward.

5) What fashion trends are you loving this season?
I am really into barrel leg pants that are dramatically big, I love how they bring architecture to my looks. I have always been (and forever will stay) a huge fan of 90s minimalism with sprinkles of rave fashion: mesh tees, oversized long sleeves with prints, utility pockets on pants & skirts for functionality, and sporty vibe. I am also loving the Y2K revival on girlies, just not for me.

6) Any tips for developing your personal style?
First of all, experiment! wear crazy things, wear boring things, wear something in between - it's all a journey & experimentation. There really is no simple way to building your personal style, it is surprisingly a lot of internal work & exploring who you are. Don't let trends overwhelm you: if you like something it doesn't mean it fits your style. Think which trends are really YOU & will incorporate into your wardrobe easily versus buying something that you loved with your eyes, but have no idea where to wear. Be selective, it's good!

7) How do you like to style your Just Black Denim?
Oh, endless ways to style! I find myself wearing Just Black Denim in a more casual way with a tee & a shirt layered over to the farmers market or to work. Adding a sneaker or a loafer can switch the vibe easily. Recently I've been inspired to style the low rise jeans in the ways that work for my style, they are a fun dance night option!
