Floral Inspiration with Punika, the founder of @puni.petals

We love your floral arrangements. Tell us more about who you are and what you do!
Aww, thank you so much! I love them too 🥹 I’m an LA-based floral designer from Phuket, Thailand. I started my floral design studio at the end of 2021 and it quickly bloomed from there! I still can’t believe the incredible journey this has taken me.

What inspires your floral designs?
The florals themself actually! Every time I create an arrangement it feels like taking myself on a little journey because I never know where I’m going to end up, I let the florals tell me where to place them—each curl and squiggle of a stem has its own story, I’m just here to help showcase them the way they want to be shown.

If you were to describe yourself as a flower, what would it be and why?
Oooo! That’s a great question—Believe it or not, I’ve never thought of it before! I feel like I’d love to be jasmine, it is understated but has the most beautiful scent. It reminds me of home in Thailand so much because I grew up having them all over the garden. That or maybe a really fun Pasta Gerber Daisy with bright colors 🌼

What flowers do you predict we will see for events and weddings in 2023?
Sculptural styles that lean into creativity and away from the “traditional” formulas of floral arrangements. Breaking rules! Negative spaces! Weird lines! I’d love to see florals being seen as a creative art form that is ever-expanding with endless possibilities.

If you could change something about the floral design industry, what would it be?
I’d love to continue to educate people on florals and how much love, care and creativity goes into it. A lot of clients don’t realize how much work goes into one floral arrangement. And on top of that it’s such a laborious job! I would love for more people to see this as an art form and something they are willing to invest in.

What's coming down the pipeline for you and Puni Petals?
This is such a big year for Puni Petals! We have our first destination wedding coming up in Mexico that I’m super excited for. There’s lot of fun ideas and collaborations this year that I can’t wait to share, and we are just getting started! I would love to launch a series of community events that partner with local artists and creatives—I would love to try my hand on doing more Puni Petals activations and experiential.

How do you like to style your Just Black Denim pants?

I love wearing my cargo pants with a cute little sweater to keep me warm during morning market runs. It’s always so cold! I also love the pockets on the Nautical Wide Leg pants, they are so deep and gives such a unique look. I just got a couple of spring pieces in soft pastel colors and I love painting them with my white or brown Just Black Denim.
